National Stock Exchange (NSE) Holidays

The National Stock Exchange or NSE is one of the main stock exchanges in India. The Mumbai-based exchange is known for its high volumes of trading in the derivatives segment and cash equities. Owned by the leading financial institutions, banks, and insurance companies of the country, NSE was established in 1992 as the first electronic exchange. The exchange was the first one to implement electronic trading systems. The exchange works the whole week except Saturdays and Sundays. It also announces its annual NSE holiday list at the beginning of each year.

NSE and its Products

NSE promotes trading in equity, debt, and derivative products that include stock and currency derivatives besides NSE bond futures.

  • The equity and equity-linked products that can be traded via NSE in the cash market include stocks, IDRs, Exchange Traded Funds, and the units of closed-ended mutual fund schemes as well as a segment devoted to the growth of the SMEs listed on EMERGE.
  • NSE offers derivative contracts on Equity, Indices, Currency, Interest Rates, and Commodities.
  • The exchange offers fixed-income securities and debt products that include government securities, corporate bonds, sovereign gold bonds and other securities traded on multiple platforms.

NSE Market Timings and Trading Holidays

Trading on the equities segments takes place on all days of the week except Saturdays and Sundays and the holidays declared by the exchange in advance.  This means no stocks can be bought or sold on NSE holidays. The market timings of the equities segment are:

The random closure is done in the last one minute. The Pre-open order matching starts immediately after the close of the pre-open order entry.

The exchange can, however, extend, advance or reduce these trading hours when it deems fit and necessary. Also, on NSE general holidays, the commodity derivatives market will open in session 2 or at a time declared by the exchange.
